Colegio de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Salamanca (España)Other forms
from 1511 to 1835
It was a "colegio menor"* that belonged to the Order of Saint Jerome and was founded in 1511. This was the founding year according to the General Chapters where the creation of the school next to the monastery of Our Lady of the Victory (Nuestra Señora de la Victoria) in Salamanca was established. However, in the following year, the school's construction was rejected. It was not until 1539 that they thought of accomplishing this work. This year was the one in which they won the lawsuit against the monastery of Our Lady of Guadaplupe (monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) in Cáceres, so they forced them to collaborate in the construction. In 1543, the monastery was unencumbered but they decided to take over the expenses that implied its construction and works in exchange for the school's control. In 1567, the students had to leave the school since they delayed the works. In 1629, the school's establishment in Salamanca was confirmed. In 1728, there were 728 monks, but in 1834, there were only 16 friars. Finally, in 1835, the school was abolished due to Mendizábal's secularization decrees.
*Between the 15th and 19th centuries, they were the colleges that existed within the universities where only secondary education was taught (baccalaureate).
