Colegio de San Francisco Javier de Graus (Huesca, España)Other forms
from 1652 to 1873
The College of San Francisco Javier was founded by Huesca's bishop, Estaban de Esmir, who wanted a college of the Society of Jesus in Graus, his native town. A large building in stone was constructed despite its prominent pecuniary costs. It was described as a sumptuous and excellent building. It was finished at the beginning of the 18th century but it was shot down in the 1960s. The church of San Francisco Javier was built near the college. Its construction took more time and it is still conserved. Baltasar Garcián worked as a teacher during its early years. The College of San Francisco Javier closed after the Society of Jesus' expulsion from Spain by the King Charles III in 1767. It was reopened as a residence during Ferdinand VII's reign (1814-1820). There is also information that point out that it operated again between 1870 and 1873.
