History:

Spanish architect and art historian. He was very fond of his uncle, José Gudiol y Cunill. He finished his education in the USA with professors W.S. Cook and Ch. R. Post. He organized the Spanish photography archive in the Frick Library (1931-1932).

During the Spanish Civil War, he was commissioner for the protection of the artistic heritage linked to the Generalitat. Once the war was over, in 1939, he exiled himself to the USA and became professor in the University of Toledo (Ohio) and in the Institute of Fine Arts of New York. In 1942, he came back to Barcelona. He specialized in medieval painting from Catalonin and in latter painters such as El Greco and Velázquez, but especially in Goya. He directed the collection Ars Hispaniae and was director of the Instituto Amatller of Hispanic art.
