Spanish historian. He was born and he passed away in Pontevedra. He studied Philosophy and Letters in the former Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Professor of Theory of Literature and of the Arts in the University of Granada, and professor of Art History in the University of Madrid. Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Madrid, and later vice rector. Member of several Royal Academies. He worked in the Centre of Historical Studies, directing for several yeas the Archivo Español de Arte journal (Spanish Art Archive). He was patron and founder of the Museum of Pontevedra, founded in 1927. He was the Director of the Museo del Prado from 1960 to 1968, although he was linked to the museum since 1913. In 1961, he continued directing the museum, even though he was already 70 years old. He retired in 1968, and he was appointed honorary director. He was awarded with several national and international distinctions, such as the Grand Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, the order of May of Argentina and the French Legion of Honour.
