Spanish deputy. Born in Madrid. Luisa Delevilleuze y Sotes and Francisco Agustín Silvela's son, deputy in Courts and Judge at the Court of Galicia. Manuel Silvela's brother, the well-known politician. Married with Isabel de Corral y Usera, Marquis of San Gregorio's daughter. HE died in Madrid.Silvela did secondary studies in Administrative Law, graduated on 30th June 1859 and obtained a PhD in Administration. In 1865 he obtained a PhD in Civil and Canonical Law.
Silvela was the head of department in Political-Administrative Law at the Central University of Madrid in 1866. A year later, he passed to the head of department in Commercial and Criminal Law form this University, dismissing in 1885 due to a voluntary extended leave of absence. He retired in 1899.
Silvela held some other posts: Member of the Rating Board of Judges and Magistrate, member of the Commission in charge of proposing the Ministry of Mercy and Justice the reforms of the Law on Organization of the judiciary and the Penal Code, and the basis to the establishment of the penitentiary system. Deputy at the Courts for the district of Santo Domingo de la Calzada (Logroño) in the Legislature 1877-1878 and 1879-1881, and for the district of Ledesma (Salamanca) in the Legislature 1884-1885 and 1886-1887. Senator of the University of Madrid from 1886 to 1889, and senator for life from 1887 to his death in 1903.
