Menéndez Pidal, Juan (1861-1915)

Juan Menéndez Pidal was a Spanish archivist, politician, and writer. He was son of the judge Juan Menéndez Fernández and Ramona Pidal, and brother of the judge Faustino Menéndez Pidal, of the painter Luis Menéndez Pidal, and of the historian and philologist Ramón Menéndez Pidal. He studied Secondary Education in Oviedo and graduated in Law from the Central University of Madrid. He was a parliamentary deputy in Asturias between 1891 and 1893, and between 1899 and 1903 he was civil governor of Pontevedra, Guadalajara, and Burgos. He joined the Cuerpo de Archiveros y Bibliotecarios (Corp of Archivists and Librarians) in 1896. He directed the "Revista de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos" (Magazine of Archives, Libraries, and Museums) and was Director of the Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN; National Historical Archive).
