Benjamin Lane (Benjamin Levine) was born on April 27, 1916, in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied at the University of Southern California for 2 years, then the University of Illinois, Champlain-Urbana. As civilian, he worked as an aircraft mechanic in the nascent airplane industry in St. Louis and also as pilot and flight engineer with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). He was a member of the Young Communist League since 1930 and also of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE in Spanish).

In February 17, 1937, he sailed for Spain aboard the “President Roosevelt” and arrived on February 27, 1937, and served with the 86th International Brigade in various hospitals and evacuation groups. In the Battle of Ebro, he was with the sanitation team as evacuation driver. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938, aboard of the “Ausonia”.

Back to Los Angeles, he met Sylvia Eisenberg and he married her in 1939. During the Second World War, Lane served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in mechanical engineering. He´s most noteworthy engineering accomplishments were designing the tracks for rides in Disneyland.

Lane was an advocate of better health care for the aged and managed a variety of health care facilities for over 30 years. He was elected Fellow in the American College of Nursing Home Administrators. He also opened a number of mental health care facilities in California.

In 1986, he traveled to Spain for the 50th anniversary recognition of the International Brigades. On September 21, 2007, Lane died in San Diego, California.
