Shufer, Max was born in Manhattan on the 7th of September 1914.He graduated from Morris High school, then attended the City College of New York graduating with a Bachelor of Sciences, and also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Commonwealth College. He joined to Phi Beta Kappa and in 1935 to the Young Communist League. He travelled to Spain with a passport under the name of Irving Rabinowitz of 21 years old. He arrived in Spain on 15th of July 1937. He attended to the Officer Training School, then send to the Machine Gun Company of the Lincoln-Washington Battalion of the 15th International Brigade where he served as Section Leader with the rank of Corporal. He was captured during the retreats but he was exchanged on the 22nd of April 1939. He returned to the United States on the 23rd of June 1939 aboard the "Manhattan". He participated in the Second World War as Civilian. He was employed as a Physicist at the Nation Bureau of Standards. He died on the 31st of March 2006 in Pawling, New York.
