History:

Walter Edward Schlekau was born on November 5, 1914, in Lemmon, South Dakota. He studied until 8th grade. He worked as truck driver. Since 1936, he was member of the Communist Party of the United States of America.

By the time he left US for Spain he was living in Omaha, Nebraska. He sailed on June 12, 1912 aboard the "Georgic" and arrived in Spain on June 30, 1937. He served with the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of the 15th International Brigade. He deserted during the retreats and arrived in Marseilles, France, on April 19, 1938. From there, he went to England.

In the Second World War, he served as Merchant Marine.

Schlekau died on April 19, 2002 in Nipomo, California.
