History:

The Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, popularly called Mac-Paps, was a unit of Canadians who fought as part of the 15th International Brigade in defense of the Spanish Republic during the Civil War. The name of the battalion recalled to William Lyon Mackenzie and Louis-Joseph Papineau, reformist politicians of the first half of the nineteenth century.

According to the number of inhabitants, Canada was the second country after France, which provided the most fighters volunteers to the Army of the Republic. According to the unit archives, the number of volunteers was of 1,448, of whom 721 died in combat. The first Canadians enrolled in the Lincoln and George Washington Battalion, participating in the Battle of Jarama, but in February 1937 others 500 volunteers have reached and so this separate battalion was formed.

The members came mostly from the working class, very motivated after the Great Depression of 1929. The Communist Party of Canada led the recruitment operations. However, its members were not only members of the Party, but also from other unions not linked with communism or politically affiliated. However many of them maintained a common bond: they were of European origin, especially Finns and Ukrainians.

The first combat of the battalion took place during the Battle of Jarama, where it obtained high popularity, followed after by the intervention in the bloody Battle of Brunete. Shortly after, it participated in the Battle of Teruel and also in the retreats of Aragon, as well as the external defense of the fronts in Catalonia and Valencia. Its last major intervention was in the Battle of the Ebro, where heavy fighting left a large number of casualties. On September 21, 1938, it was still present in the Ebro Front when the republican government gave the order to withdraw, so the battalion was disbanded and its members repatriated to their homeland.

The Canadian government was aware that citizens of its country went against the adopted decisions of nonintervention, so it denied entry to those who fight for the Spanish Republic until January 1939 when finally authorized their return.
