History:

Sidney Harris was born on September 5, 1916, in Leeds, England. He grew up in a Jewish Orphanage. He attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was single and worked as salesman for a woolens company. In 1937 he became a member of the Young Communist League.

He sailed on November 6, 1937, aboard the “Lafayette” using a British passport and arrived in Spain on November 27, 1937. He served with the Lincoln-Washington Battalion of the 15th International Brigade, fighting in Teruel and in the retreats. On April 2, 1938, during the Retreats, he was wounded and the next day, he was captured near Gandesa. He was reported as missing in action and finally he was released on April 26, 1938, together with the last of the Canadian prisoners of war.

He volunteered to fight in the Second World War with the US Army but was rejected, so he focused on photography and worked as a photographer and journalist for many of the major unions in Chicago from the mid 1950's until his death, on July 8, 1989, in Chicago, Illinois.
