Nan Green was born in Nottingham in 1904. She worked for Spanish Aid in London. Her husband, George Green, served with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, so she also went to Spain in 1937 and served for a year under Len Crome, the chief medical officer of the Republican Army’s 15th Corps. Nan and her husband were politically active, initially in the Labour Party and later in the Communist Party.

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, George volunteered to help the Republican cause. He went with Wogan Phillips, who was wounded and returned to Britain. Phillips asked Nan if she could go out to Spain and work in a hospital.

George was killed at the Battle of Ebro on September 23, 1938, the very last day that the International Brigades fought the fascists, and Nan found about it some months later. The following year, Nan went with a ship-load of Spanish refugees to Mexico and finally returned to Britain in 1939.

After the Second World War, Nan joined the peace movement, helping to organize the famous peace conference in Sheffield. Later, she was invited as Spanish translator in an international peace conference. There she was offered a job helping to run an English-language magazine. In the early 1960s, she returned to London and got an editorial job with Lawrence and Wishart. She later became Secretary of the International Brigade Association.

She died in 1984, and her ashes were taken to Spain to be scattered on the soil where her husband has his unknown grave.
