He arrived in Baltimore when he was 3 years old. His father, José Robles Pazos, worked there as a Spanish teacher at the University Johns Hopkins. While they were on vacation in Spain in 1936, the Civil War broke out. They both decided to stay there and work for the Republic. Robles joined the Office of Foreign Press as a brigade member. In 1940, he was captured and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted thanks to the intervention of the American administration, and he was released some years later. He exiled in Mexico and had a distinguished career as an engineer and professor at the National University of Mexico. He married Dolores de Benito Cebrián (daughter of María Cebrián, cousin of Francisco Robles' mother, Margarita Villegas). They had one son, Rafael Robles de Benito.
