He was a translator and a Spanish teacher murdered during the Spanish Civil War. He translated the American John Dos Passos, among other authors. He studied Philosophy and Arts in Madrid. When he graduated, he started working as a teacher of Spanish literature. He married Márgara Villegas, Amparo Villegas' sister (a famous actress at the time) the following year. He moved to Baltimore with his son in 1920 to work as a Spanish teacher at the John Hopkins University. In 1924, his second child, Margarita, was born. The married couple counted on John Dos Passos' friendship in the United States. He translated his two works into Spanish: "Manhattan Transfer" and "Rocinante vuelve al camino". The Civil War broke out while they were in Spain spending their holidays. José Robles asked permission to the university to stay in Spain operating in favour of the Spanish Republic. He was assigned to the Ministry of War as a translator and worked as the interpreter and collaborator of the Soviet general Vladimir Gorev due to his Russian knowledge. In 1937, he was arrested while he was in Valencia. John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway ended their friendship due to Robles Pazos' murder.
