He was the son of Purificación Fernández de Villegas (sister of the famous actress Amparo Villegas), who was married to a well-known theater manager. Jorge enlisted the people's army at the age of 16 (1936). He became an officer soon due to his intellectual and leadership qualities. He was imprisoned for 5 years when the war ended. After his release, he crossed the Atlantic, where he met his wife, África Medina Navascués, a veterinarian. She was the daughter of María Navascués and Manuel Medina.
He had contact with several Mexican and Latin American writers as well as with other Spanish exiled intellectuals while he stayed in Mexico.
