Spanish writer, philologist, literary critic and historian. He was politician too. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the Central University of Madrid.
He was the son of Marcelino Menéndez Pintado, professor of Mathematics at the High School of Santander and major of Santander during the progressist biennium, and of María Jesús Pelayo y España. He had three siblings: Enrique (writer), Jesusa and Agustín Menéndez Pelayo.
He was Director of the National Library, member of the Royal Spanish Academy and of the Academy of History. In the latter he was librarian since 1892 and director since 1910.
He dedicated his life to the Spanish and Hispano-American literature and to philology. Brother of the writer Enrique Menéndez Pelayo. He was nominated to the Nobel Prize of Literature.
