John Ford is considered the great American film director. Along with D. W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille, they were considered the first generation in creating the narative film in America. His career began in 1913 when he moved to Hollywood to meet his brother, Francis Ford, who was already there working as actor. It was in 1917 when he made his debut as film director with his movie "The Tornado". The genre he most worked with was Western. In 1924, he released the movie "The Iron Horse" and, form that moment, he started to deal with different styles within silent films. He started his career in talking films with movies like "The Black Watch" (1929). Due to this movie's great success, Ford started to have more freedom when directing and went back to Western genre with the movie "Stagecoach" (1939). He recieved many nominations and awards: four Oscars for best direction for "The Informer" (1935), "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "How Green was my Valley" (1941) and "The Quiet Man" (1952), and one Oscar for best picture in 1941 for "How Green was my Valley". He also was the first winner of the American Film Institute Award in 1973.
