He was a Spanish writer, intellectual, politician and film scriptwriter, grandson of the politician Antonio Maura. His work was mainly written in French and he was Minister of Culture of Spain between 1988 and 1991.

He spent the years that the Spanish Civil War lasted in La Haya, where his father was ambassador of Spain. Once the conflict was over, and as he could not go back to Spain, his family settled in Paris. In this city he would study Philosophy at the Sorbonne University.

During the Nazi occupation of Paris, in the Second World War, he enrolled in the French Resistance as many other Spanish refugees. He joined the PCE (Communist Party of Spain) in 1942 and, in 1943, after being demanded, he was arrested and sent to the concentration camp of Buchenwald, stay that would mark his literary work.

In the Communist Party he performed an intense clandestine activity in Spain under the alias of Federico Sánchez. In the sixties he was expelled from the party and he dedicated himself to his literary activity.

He did not participate in politics again until the democratic period, when he was appointed Minister of Culture, between 1988 and 1991, during the government of Felipe González.
