Spanish politician, ambassador, physician and professor.
In Spain, Solana has been a deputy of PSOE for Madrid in the Constituent, I, II, III, IV and V Legislatures, in which he has been the Minister of Culture (1982-1988), Spokesperson of the Government (1985-1988), Minister of Education and Sciences (1988-1992), of Foreign Affairs (1992-1995), with Felipe González's governments.
Moreover, he has held significant international posts, such as the Secretary General of NATO (1995-1999), High Representative of the European Union Board of Foreign Politics and Common Security (1999-2000) and Commander in Chief of EUFOR (1999-2009).
From 1975, Solana is a professor in Solid State Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid. Currently he works in ESADE, teaching the chair in Democratic Leadership and Governing, and he frequently writes think pieces for several mass media and opinion forums.
