She was a Scottish citizen and the Commandant of the Scottish Ambulance Unit (SAU) during Spanish Civil War. She worked at the University of Glasgow, precisely in the office of the Hispanist, Sir Daniel Macaulay. This business man, politician and professor decided to provide humanitarian assistance to Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and he appointed Fernanda as its Commandant because of her high proficiency in Spanish and because of her family ties with the country. The Unit, ruled by Fernanda, arrived to Madrid in 1936 and it stayed there for some months before going back to Scotland. In 1937, the Unit went back to Madrid renewed and with more volunteers. Even though it acted in the Government-controlled area, the Unit was surrounded by controversy due to the accusation of connivance with the rebels. This led to the withdrawal of some doctors who were working for the Unit. Fernanda stayed in Madrid until the end of the conflict and she headed back to Scotland in April 1939, when the capital had already fallen into Franco's hands.
