History:

Spanish jurist and politician. His parents were Cayo de Azcárate and Delfina Flórez, and his brothers, Patricio, Pablo, Luis and María. Azcárate was Gumersino Azcárate's nephew, who was Professor and one of the founders of the Free Teaching Institution. He got married with Emilia González, and both had three children: Juan Cayo, Carmen and Isabel. Following his family's liberal and republican tradition, Azcárate studied at the Free Teaching Institution. He worked as a Professor in Political Law, and in the 20's, he joined the Reformist Party of Melquíades Álvarez. He took part in the Republican Service Group along with José Ortega y Gasset or Gregorio Marañón, and their principal aim was to establish the Republic in Spain. In 1931, this Group obtained 16 deputies, being Azcárate who was elected deputy for León, and then he became the Secretary. Right when the Spanish Civil War broke out, he was appointed Minister of State in Diego Martínez Barrio's Government, but he didn't worked as it. At the end of the Civil War, he went into exile to Venezuela. Azcárate came back to Spain in 1977, and he was elected Senator by the Royal Family at the first Courts during the Spanish transition, joining the Parliamentarian Group Agrupación Independiente (Independent Group), made up of Senators named by the Royal Family, being Azcárate its representative. In 1979 he was re-elected senator of UCD for León. In 1982, Azcárate was appointed President of the Prado's Museum Board.
