Spanish Professor in Comparative Legislation and co-founder of the Free Teaching Institution. He was the driving force and first President of the Social Reforms Institute. Azcárate's parents were Patricio de Azcárate y Corral (philosopher and politician) and Justa Menéndez-Morán Palacio. He got married with Emilia Inerarity. In 1855, he started studying Law at the University of Oviedo. Then, he moved to Madrid, when he graduated and obtained a PhD, at the Central University, where he obtained the High School studies degree in Philosophy and Letters. Azcárate's academic career focused on the Central University of Madrid, being the assistant professor in Political Economy and Statistics. He was appointed Professor in Comparative Law, General Law History and Private Law of Modern and Ancient Towns. Moreover, he was the Secretary at the Faculty of Law. Azcárate worked also as dean and professor at the Free Teaching Institute, vice-president of the Scientific Researches and Educational Extension Board, and the Madrilenian Academy of Law and Jurisprudence. Furthermore, he was deputy at the General Courts for León (province), lawyer at the School of Lawyers of Madrid, president of the Literary and Scientific Athenaeum of Madrid, member of the Royal Academy of Political and Moral Sciences and of History, member of the Social Reforms Commission, secretary of the Budget National Association Board, director-general of the Civil and of the Land and Notary Registry.
