History:

Spanish politician, professor and lawyer, who was born on 17 March 1934 in Vitoria‑Gasteiz. He studied Baccalaureate in the Santa María School (Marianistas) of Gasteiz, and he concluded his Law studies in the University of Valladolid. He started working as a professor at the College of Social Work and then he worked as a lawyer at the Chamber of Urban Property and at his private law firm. He abandoned his legal profession in both cases for his deep dedication to his position, although from October 1992 he reassumed, partially, his teaching activity as a Law Professor in the School of Social Work. Regarding his political life, José Ángel Cuerda held the post of Deputy for Álava representing the EAJ-PNV during the Constituent Parliamentary term in 1977, a position he resigned when he was appointed Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz. He was uninterrupted Mayor until 1999.
