History:

Spanish politician, lawyer, and professor. He studied Law at the University of Madrid, subsequently expanding his studies at the University of Oxford, where he got a degree in Foreign Trade and Economic Development. He was a trade specialist, economist of the State and professor of economic policy at the Complutense University of Madrid (in special services). Member of Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD/Union of Democratic Centre), in the 1977 general elections he was elected deputy to the Congress for the electoral district of Alicante, seat that he repeated in the 1979 elections. In the government formation of Adolfo Suárez, Luis Gámir was named Technical Secretary‑General of the Ministry of Agriculture, practicing subsequently the chairmanship of the Banco Hipotecario (Mortgage Bank) and the State Secretariat for Social Security. In government reorganization, Adolfo Suarez appointed him Minister for Commerce and Tourism in May 1980. In December 1981which he was also Minister for Transport and Communications, being Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo the President of the Government. After the UCD dissolution after the collapse in the 1982 elections, he left his political life, until in 1991 when he joined the Partido Popular (PP/People's Party). He was PP general coordinator of Economy and member of its national Executive since that year. In the 1993 general elections he was elected deputy again, this time for Murcia. He won this seat again in the 1996, 2000, and 2004 elections, on this last occasion for the electoral district of Madrid. In 2006 he left his seat to be appointed vice president of the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (Spanish Nuclear Safety Council).
