He was the founder of Banca Catalana (1967), of which he was a board member until 1977, as well as of Banco Industrial. In 1972 he formed the Grupos de Acción al Servicio de Catalunya (GASC/Action Groups in the Service of Catalonia), which other groups joined (1974). The Convergència Democrática de Catalunya (CDC/ Democratic Convergence of Catalonia) was formed. Jordi Pujol was Secretary‑General of this party. When the Generalitat of Catalonia was restored, he formed part of its Executive Committee. In 1977, President Josep Tarradellas appointed him Adviser of the first autonomous government of Catalonia in democracy. He was PDC deputy for Barcelona in the Constituent Assembly (1977‑1979) and in the I Parliamentary term with CIU (Convergència i Unió), also for Barcelona. In March 1980 he was discharged to be appointed deputy of the Parliament of Catalonia and President of the Generalitat (1980-2003). In 1993 he voiced his support for the PSOE of Felipe Gonzalez, lending seats but not reaching the coalition. This was repeated three years later with Partido Popular (PP/People's Party) government of José María Aznar.
