History:

Spanish composer. He was born on May 9 of 1887 in Granada. Son of Celedonio Alonso Blanco, civil servant of the Finance Delegation of Granada, and Pilar López Carmona. His siblings were Antonio and Pilar Alonso López. He was one of the most renowned zarzuela composers of the XX century with a large artistic production. He was introduced to the musical world by his mother, an amateur pianist, and he went to continue his studies with Antonio Segura and Celestino Vila, this last on being a chapel master at the cathedral of Granada. One of his first works were three lyrical pieces, the text written by Manuel Medina Olmos. In 1903 he was appointed head of the choir group of the Philharmonic Society of Granada, and in 1906 he became head of the Banda de la Fábrica de Obreros Polvoristas del Fargue, joining both formations in the concerts of Corpus of Granada in 1907. In 1911 he performed "Almas grandes" at the Cervantes Theatre of Granada. He moved to Madrid that same year. He made a way for himself in the capital thanks to his contacts and with the music magazine "Música, luz y alegría", first released with a considerable success at Teatro de Novedades during the 1915-1916 season. However, he gained his recognition at a popular level with the paso doble "La banderita", part of the work "Las corsarias" which won him the Great Cross of Alfonso XII. In 1920 he married Julia de la Joya, with whom he had five children. In that decade he had his greatest successes with the zarzuelas "La bejarana", "La linda tapada", "La calesera" or "La parranda". The 1930s was a prolific time with releases such as "Las Leandras" starring Celia Gámez, a magazine that includes popular numbers such as the Pichi chotis and the passacaglia of "Los nardos". Before the Spanish Civil War started, he wrote other works. One of the most popular ones was the one-act farce "Me llaman la presumida". After the war he kept on composing, but this time at a slower pace. Other of his best-known zarzuelas was "La zapaterita", released in 1941. "Luna de miel en El Cairo", a two-act operetta, with text by José Muñoz Román, was first performed at the Martín Theatre of Madrid. In 1947 he became president of the SGAE, after previously being the vice-president. He died on May 18 of 1948 in Madrid.
