History:

Spanish violinist, composer and teacher.

Born on 2 August 1892 in Seville (Spain). He received his first music lessons from his father, Manuel Font Fernández de la Herrán, director of the Banda Municipal de Sevilla; brother of the also composer Manuel Font de Anta. José went to Brussels to study violin and composition with César Thomson. In 1914, he won first prize in a contest at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Back in Spain, he started giving concerts with his brother Manuel on the piano, making his debut at the Ateneo de Madrid. His repertoire included pieces by Pablo Sarasate, Niccolò Paganini and others. His tour around Germany, Belgium and France in 1919, was a resounding success. José settled in Madrid in the 1920s, and spent part of his career writing zarzuelas and "cuplés" for the theatre, with texts by the Álvarez Quintero brothers. One decade later, he returned to Seville, where he worked as a teacher and composer and wrote several essays on music theory and pedagogy.

His compositions included symphonic works like"Concierto andaluz", dedicated to his brother Manuel, and "Marina, esquisse para violín, con acompañamiento de pequeña orquesta" (1913); band music like the processional march "Resignación" (1924); songs such as "Cante jondo", "El caracol encantado" and "En el jardín del misterio", all for voice and piano; and other pieces compiled in "Cuadernos de lieder". Other remarkable works in his catalogue are "Por el río Guadalquivir" and "La casida de Almutamid" for violin and piano, and "Fantasía andaluza" for solo piano. He passed away on 28 December 1988 in Seville (Spain).
