Spanish educator, composer, music critic and poet.
Born on 6 June 1880 in Barcelona, and passed away in the same city on 13 October 1953. He married Montserrat Galí Fabra, with whom he had seven children, including the architect Bartomeu Llongueras and the composer and educator Josep Jordi Llongueras. He studied piano with Enrique Granados, and harmony and composition with Domènec Mas i Serracant, Enric Morera and Lluís Millet. He founded the Escola Coral de Terrassa in 1901, and was the school's director until 1918. In 1911 he travelled to France, Germany and Switzerland. In the latter country he met Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, and decided to attend his institute in Geneva, where he earned a diploma. Back home, in 1912 he established and directed the Institut Catalá de Rítmica i Plàstica, where he introduced the Dalcroze method in Catalonia. He ran the Escola Municipal de Música de Terrassa from 1912 to 1918, and Barcelona's municipal music school until 1947. His circle of friends included Pau Casals, Lluís Millet and Manuel de Falla, with whom he began corresponding in 1926.
As a music critic, Joan wrote for "La Veu de Catalunya" and "Revista Musical Catalana", and he worked to spread the philosophy of the Orfeó Català through his musical activity. He also organised cultural events. He composed several well-known works for the institute he founded, such as "Cançons i jocs d'infants" and "Les cançons de Nadal". As a poet and essayist, he published eleven poetry anthologies between 1906 and 1952, in addition to "Infimes cròniques d'alta civitat" under the pen name Chiron.
