History:

Spanish pianist, theoretician, librarian and music critic.

Born in 1876 in Barcelona, and passed away in the same city in 1956. Brother of Leonor and Estrella Lliurat i Carreras, who were members of the choral section of the Orfeó Català. His music education began at the Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona, where he won first prize for piano with Juan Bautista Pujol, and studied harmony and counterpoint with José Rodoreda and Enrique Granados. He perfected his skills in Paris with Charles-Auguste de Bériot, and in Brussels with Arthur de Greef. Felipe Pedrell helped him while he was in the French capital, from 1884 to 1887. He worked as a pianist in Spain and the rest of Europe, but when an accident ended his performing career, he became a music critic.

Lliurat was editor-in-chief of "Revista Musical Catalana" from 1904 to 1936, and of "La Veu de Catalunya" after 1919. He served on the executive board of the Orfeó Català in the capacity of curator and librarian/archivist in 1912, 1913 and 1914. He also contributed to newspapers like "El Poble Català", "La Vanguardia" and "Le Monde Musical". In 1927, he was invited to work on the "Diccionario de la música ilustrado" as an editor. His training and experience made for excellent reviews, and he often championed new works; a case in point is Manuel de Falla's "Concerto per clavicémbalo (o pianoforte), flauto, oboe, clarineto, violino e violoncello", on which he wrote an article. He also corresponded with Falla, and occasionally sent him texts. He published "La música i els músics" in 1933 and "Teoría de la música" in 1941.
