Spanish historian, medievalist, and archivist. He was born in Azcona (Valle de Yerri, Navarra) on December 24, 1923. His real name is Jesús Morrás Santamaría, but he is known by the religious name he received upon entering the Orden de los Frailes Capuchinos Menores in 1934.
After studying Humanities at the seminario capuchino in Alsasua, he began studying Philosophy in Estella in 1939, completing his studies in 1943. He was ordained a priest in 1946. He graduated in Ecclesiastical History from the Universidad Gregoriana in Rome, where he studied from 1947 to 1950. In 1952, he obtained his Ph.D. at the same university with a thesis titled La elección y reforma del episcopado español en tiempo de los Reyes Católicos, supervised by Ricardo García-Villoslada, with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship. He graduated from the Vatican School of Palaeography, Diplomatics, and Archivistics. He also earned a degree in History from the Universidad de Zaragoza, where he also completed doctoral studies. Between 1951 and 1992, he was a teacher of Ecclesiastical History at the Colegio de Teología de los capuchinos in Pamplona, and later at the Centro Superior de Estudios Teológicos "San Miguel Arcángel" (CSET), after which he focused exclusively on research.
He was prominent in archival historical research, reflected in the solid documentary sources of his numerous internationally renowned academic works. A specialist in the Late Middle Ages, particularly in the reigns of Henry IV and the Catholic Monarchs, he also studied the reforms of the Spanish Church before the outbreak of the Lutheran Reformation. He wrote the biographies of Isabel la Católica (1964) and Juana la Beltraneja (2007), researched the history of his native region, the Kingdom of Navarre, the province of Guipúzcoa in the 16th and 17th centuries, and his own religious order. In 2011, he was named a corresponding academician of the Real Academia de la Historia. In 2014, he received the Premio Príncipe de Viana de Cultura. He was a member of the Institución Fernando el Católico since 1952. He was the archivist of the Archivo Provincial de los Capuchinos in Pamplona from 1952 to 2002. He passed away in Pamplona on May 21, 2022.
