History:

The "Hospicio de Indias" was a lodging and teaching place (Indian dialects). It also focused on the acclimation of the religious people that went to America to evangelize the indigenous. This building housed the Jesuits that had been expelled from the Indias and, later, the French soldiers that had been prisoners in the battle of Bailen in 1808. The presence of Jesuits in El Puerto dates back to the 17th century. Father Bonifaz thought of founding a school of preachers in the city to concentrate on teaching. The project was not carried out due to the Duke of Medinacelli's rigidness. On the other hand, the Society of Jesus managed the Hospicio de Indias' headquarters in el Puerto de Santa María, also known as the "Casa de la Misericordia" since 1670. This institution was actually used as a lodge and a school where Indian dialcets were taught. It also focused on the acclimation of the religious people that arrived in America to evangelize the indigenous. This same building housed the Jesuits that had been expelled from the Indias and, later, the French soldiers that have been prisoners in the battle of Bailen in 1808. Some sources state that the Jesuit school operated at the same time as this house. It was built in 1735 and its name is still unknown. Nowadays, the "Hospicio de Indias" does not exist and the still operative Jesuit School is called San Luis Gonzada. It was built in the 19th century and possibly constructed over the previous-mentioned college. It is difficult to supply documentary evidence about this college's development because of the conflicting documentation, its relationship to the "Hospicio" and the lack of data.
