History:

When the school was moved from Oñate to Bergara, the Jesuit community arrived to this last-mentioned town at the end of the 16th century. At the beginning, it was going to be placed in Vitoria thanks to the donation assessed at 1.800 ducats of the Genoese Magdalena de Centurión. However, the town's authorities refused to accept a new religious community. So the Jesuits moved to Bergara. The founding was carried out in 1593, in some rented houses in the old street of Arrabal. The Jesuits amplified the rest of their edification from there. The first church's construction began in July 1597 in a site given by the Society in front of the Houses of the Council. It had one single nave and some images and paintings transferred from Oñate on the inside. The initial school was also substituted by another one of larger dimensions very soon. The construction's work started in March 1604. It was finished in 1630. The same happened with the temple: the old building became too small and a new construction started in 1628 under the direction of the master of Azkoitia Juan Martínez de Aguirre. The façade's restoration was the following work to be initiated. Then, the combination of Baroque buildings that formed the school of the Society of Jesus was finished. At present, the space is very different due to the transformations later suffered. The Jesuits stayed in Bergara until 1767, when they were expelled by the Royal Decree issued on the 27th of February and the Pragmatic Sanction of the 2nd of April 1767 ordered by Charles III. This happened when the school counted on two grammar teachers and one of basic education. The building maintained its teaching functions because the newly-created "Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País" settled in it.
