He was born in Madrid on the 19th of February 1884 and died in Madrid on the 5th of January 1950. His parents were Antonio Machado Álvarez and Ana Ruiz Hernández and his brother s Manuel, Antonio, José and Joaquín. He studied at the Instituto Cardenal Cisneros in Madrid and later, he graduated in Law at Central University of Madrid. He worked as a public servant being member of the Corps of Prisons (Cuerpo de Prisiones) and as a poet, like his brothers Manuel and Antonio. As a public servant in prison he supported Concepcion Arenal's theories about the social reintegration of the prisoner. He was debugged after Civil War though he was not sanctioned. However, he was declared a forced surplus and his salary was reduced by one third. The last stage of his life was devoted to literature.
