History:

Isabella of Portugal was wife of Charles I of Spain. Queen of Spain and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. She was born in Lisbon in 1503 and died in Toledo in 1539.

She was the daughter of King Manuel I Portugal and Maria of Aragon, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs. She is the second of eight children born of that marriage. In 1526 she married her cousin, emperor and king Charles V, in Seville. They had four children: future Philip II and the infants John, Ferdinand, and Mary, who also became empress.

She was regent of Castile and Aragon (1529-1533 and 1535-1536). She took part in the treaty with Portugal on the Moluccas (1529) and influenced the signing of the Cambray Peace agreement. She died in Toledo of confinement.
