King of Spain between 1975 and 2014. Born in Rome, January 5, 1938. He is the son of Juan de Borbón y Battenberg, Count of Barcelona, and María de las Mercedes de Borbón y Orleáns. He married Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark in 1962 and they have three children Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo; Infanta Cristina, and Felipe (now Felipe VI, King of Spain since 2015). He was pronounced King of Spain on 22 November 1975 after the death of Francisco Franco. The following year he appointed Adolfo Suarez as President of the Government and thus began the so-called "Transition to Democracy", which allowed the establishment of a rule of law in Spain. He sanctioned the new Constitution issued by the Constituent Cortes on December 27, 1978, which recognized the parliamentary monarchy as the political form of the Spanish State. His role in re-establishing democracy in Spain has been recognized through numerous international awards and prizes such as the Charlemagne Prize in 1982. In June 2014 he abdicated the Spanish Crown and his son Felipe became King Felipe VI.
