History:

She was the daughter of Dr. Francisco Zapata Castañeda, a doctor and bacteriologist from Seville and the founder in Mexico of the "Laboratorios del Dr. Zapata, S.A.", and his wife Carolina Hernández Hernández. They both emigrated to Mexico before the Civil War (probably in the 1920s). María del Carmen Zapata Hernández , the third of the couple's children, was born in Coyoacán on the 22nd of January 1924. Even though the reasons are unknown, her birth did not appear in the Civil Registry of Mexico until the 4th of April 1930, when her younger sister Carolina Victoria was also registered. The brothers José and Enrique Monroy Benedid, two businessmen born in Benavente (Zamora) that were living in Coyoacán, acted as witnesses in both inscriptions. The whole family made several trips to Spain after Carolina Victoria's birth (1930) but before the Civil War that are documented in Mexico's National Registry of Foreigners. In 1939, the family settled for good in Mexico. She graduated in Chemical Sciences by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 1947, her future father-in-law, Candido Bolívar Pieltain, underlined one of her works in the magazine "Ciencia". On the 17th of May 1947, she married her fellow José Ignacio Bolívar Goyanes, an exiled in Mexico after the Civil War and member of two important families of Spanish scientists. When she got married, she had already received the Mexican nationality. However, her husband still maintained the Spanish citizenship. Among the marriage's witnesses, we have Dr. Victoriano Mateo de Acosta Arce, a friend of the Zapata family and native of Benavente, and the distinguished Mexican chemist Rafael Illescas Frisbie, with whom her husband founded the Chemical Society of Mexico. She was the mother of Dr. Francisco Gonzalo Bolívar Zapata, a noted Mexican biochemist born on the 7th of March 1948. He received the names of his two brothers, who had died in 1942.
