History:

The Fifth Regiment was a Madrid-based military linked to the Communist Party of Spain, which was formed at an early stage of the popular mobilization aimed at protecting the republican legality. The Salesiano School in Francos Rodríguez Street (district of Estrecho in Madrid) housed its headquarters and recruitment center. The Antifascist Worker and Peasant Militias requisitioned the school. The military forces that took the same name were formed in that location and commanded by Enrique Castro Delgado with the help of José Fernández Navarro, Francisco Galán Rodríguez, Daniel Ortega Martínez and Vittori Vidali. In September 1936, Castro was succeeded by Enrique Líster as commander until the regiment's disbandment and the formation of the 1st Mixed Brigade. This military unit, which had provided military education and training to circa 70,000 men prior to its disbandment in 1936, was organized in several units, known as battalions and columns. Such units were scattered across Madrid, covering the area from the mountain range to the capital city.
