Ignacio Gallego was a member of the Partido Comunista Español (PCE/Spanish Communist Party) and grandfather of the writer Rubén Gallego.
In 1936, he joined the Juventudes Socialistas (Socialist Youth) in Jaén, being appointed Secretary‑General of the Provincial Committee of the Juventud Socialista Unificada (Unified Socialist Youth) of Jaén. Exiled first in the French Algeria, and passing through the concentration camps of Morán and Bogadí, he settled in Moscow shortly before the end of the Second World War.
In 1948 he was a member of the PCE Central Committee and in 1955 he was part of its executive committee.
He returned to Spain clandestinely in 1976, reappearing publicly in the legalization of the PCE in 1977. He moved to Madrid and he was elected deputy to the Congress of Deputies for the Province of Córdoba in the 1977 and 1979 elections.
In 1986 he was one of the signatories of the birth of the Izquierda Unida (United Left) coalition.
