History:

Spanish communist politician. After the Spanish Civil War, in which he participated as political commissar of El Campesino brigade, since 1939 he went into exile in France and Mexico. He returned to Catalonia in 1947 as head of the Partido Socialista Unificado de Cataluña (PSUC/Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia), in order to organise its reconstruction. Moreover, in 1951 Gregorio López also organized the tram strike in Barcelona. He was arrested and tortured in that year. In 1954 he was expelled to Mexico, although he returned soon and he was responsible in the underground of the Partido Socialista Unificado de Catalunya from 1947 to 1951. He also was the PSUC Secretary‑General from 1965 to 1977.

In democracy, he was elected Deputy for Barcelona in the Constituent Parliamentary term of 1977, I and II parliamentary terms, as well as representative of the Congress of Deputies in the Council of Europe since January 1978.

He was married to the writer and PSUC militant Teresa Pàmies and father of the writer Sergi Pàmies.

On 23 February 2004 he was invested Doctor Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia for his participation in the anti‑Franco struggle, together with Maria Salvo Iborra and Agustí de Semir. In 2005, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia, granted by the then President Pasqual Maragall, 'in recognition of his civic and political career in the service of Catalonia'. In 1973 the singer Raimon dedicated him the song T'he conegut sempre igual (t'he conegut sempre igual com ara, els cabells blancs, la bondat a la cara, 'I have always known you just like now, the white hair, the kindness in the face').
