History:

Spanish writer, essayist, and critic. He was also a journalist, war correspondent, and ambassador, as well as member of the literary generation of 1998. Son of the engineer Manuel de Maeztu Rodríguez, a Cuban landowner of Navarre origin and Juana Whitney, daughter of a British diplomat. He spent part of his youth in Paris and in Havana dedicated to various jobs. He joined the journalism word. In 1905 he was sent to the United Kingdom as correspondent for the newspapers La Correspondencia de España, Nuevo Mundo and Heraldo de Madrid. He traveled through France and Germany and he was a war correspondent during the First World War in Italy between 1914 and 1915.

During the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera he was stationed in Buenos Aires as a Spanish ambassador between 1928 and 1930. He was a parliamentary deputy by Guipúzcoa during the Second Republic. In 1934 he was elected member of the Spanish Academy.

At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, after the coup d'état of 18 July 1936, he was arrested in Madrid by Republican militiamen and imprisoned in the prison of Ventas on 30 July. He was shot in the cemetery of Aravaca on 29 October 1936.
