Concepción Contel Barea is a Spanish archivist. She graduated in History in 1964. One year later she completed the Postgraduate Course in Medieval Studies at the University of Poitiers (France). In 1966 she obtained the Extraordinary Prize of the University of Zaragoza and in 1969 she got a PhD in Historical Sciences. She joined the Corps of Archivists, Librarians, and Archaeologists of the State in 1969. She held the position of Chief of the Archive in the Cabinet of Documentation, Library, and Archive of the Ministry of Education and Science between 1970 and 1981. In that year she started working at the Subdirectorate‑General of the State Archives of the Ministry of Culture. In 1983 she became Director of the Archives of the Supreme Court and of the National High Court of Madrid, as well as of the Technical Direction of the Archives of Court of First Instance and Preliminary Investigations of Madrid. In 1990 she was appointed Director of the Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN; National Historical Archive) until 2006. She has been a technical adviser in the Subdirectorate General of Documentation and Publications of the Ministry of Justice until her retirement in 2011.
