History:

Spanish writer and diplomat.

Son of Francisco Ganivet Morcillo and Ángeles García Siles. Siblings: Josefa, Encarnación, Natalio, Isabel and Francisco Ganivet García. He completed his high school studies at the Instituto de Granada and later, Law and Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad de Granada. He obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Letters in 1890 at the Universidad Central de Madrid with the thesis: "La importancia de la lengua sánscrita y servicios que su lenguaje ha prestado a la ciencia del lenguaje en general y a la Gramática Comparada en particular". During his university years in Madrid, he forged a great friendship with Francisco Navarro Ledesma and Miguel de Unamuno.

Professionally, he passed the public examination for the Corps of Specialist Archivists and Librarians and was assigned to the Biblioteca del Ministerio de Fomento. Later, he passed the public examination and obtained a position in the Cuerpo Consular and was destined to Antwerp, Helsinki and Riga.

From his relationship with Amelia Roldán Llanos, his children Natalia, Angel Tristán and Luisa Ganivet Roldán were born. He passed away tragically in Riga by throwing himself into the Daugava River He is considered the precursor of the Generation of '98 and his most important work was the "Idearium español" (1897). His mortal remains were repatriated to Spain and rest in Granada.
