History:

Born in June 20th, 1870, in Éibar (Guipúzcoa, Spain), and passed away in October 31st, 1945, in Madrid (Spain). Member of a family of artists, he was son of Plácido Zuloaga and of Lucía Zamora Zabaleta. Nephew of the ceramist Daniel Zuloaga.

He received an artistic formation from his father, who sent him to Paris to continue with his studies. In 1887, he did a first visit to Madrid, admiring directly in the Prado museum the Spanish paintings of the Golden Century. He was de discoverer of El Greco and the great promoter of Francisco de Goya. He presented himself for the first time in the National Exposition of Fine Arts of Madrid in 1887 with "Un sacerdote rezando". From these years there are also "El ciego de Arrate" or "La fuente de Éibar". Before travelling to Paris in 1889, he spent some months in Rome, where he expanded his formation.

In the French capital, he entered in contact with other artists like Ramón Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Edgar Degas or Auguste Rodin. He was a student in the Académia Libre and of the Académie La Pallette, and he studied with Henroi Gerveux and Eugéne Carrière. During his Parisian stay, he exhibited in the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (1890), la Galerie Le Barc (1891, 1894) or in the Salon National de Beaux-Arts of Paris (1894), where he repesented "El enano Don Pedro". He travelled frequently to the Basque Country, where in 1891, he took part in the foundation of the society El Escritorio de Bilbao, for which he painted the mural "Amanacer" (1894), as well as the ones of Casino de Bermeo in 1895. He became friends with the painter Maxime Dethomas, with whose sister, Valentine, he married in 1899. They had two children, Lucía and Antonio. That same year he took part in the Salon de la Société National de Beaux-Arts of Paris with "Portraits [Mi tío y mis primas]".

He reached international prestige by exposing in the main European capitals, and in the United States. In 1905, he did his first theatrical decoration for the representation of "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, in Berlin. That same year, he also collaborated with the opera "Pepita Jiménez", by Isaac Albéniz. From 1908, he was related with the Hispanic Society of New York, that bought "La familia del torero gitano", appointed him as a member of it, and for which he made an exhibition in New York in 1909. In 1911, he received the Great Prize of Honour of the Esposizione Internazionale di Belle Arti di Roma. During the first World War, he adhered to the Spanish manifesto of the Allies' supporters, and in 1917, France distinguished him with the Legion of Honour. In 1925, he obtained a great success in the New Yorker Reinhardt Gallery.

He made the puppets for "El retablo de maese Petro" by Manuel de Falla, play that was represented in the Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique of París, in 1928. He had met the composer in 1910 in the French capital, with whom he remained friends and of the one who he painted a portrait of in oils in 1932. From 1931, he was President of the Patronage of the Museum of Moderna Art of Madrid. The Spanish Civil War, that surprised him in Zumaya (Guipúzcoa), supposed for him a period of initiation in sculpture. In 1942, he held his last solo exhibition in the Sala Argos of Barcelona. His work, framed within realism and costumbrism, connected with the revision of the profound Spain, that members of the Generation of the 98 carried out.
