History:

King of Spain. Born in Madrid on November 28, 1857 and died in El Pardo on November 25, 1885. Son of Isabella II, Queen of Spain, and Francisco de Asís de Borbón. His reign initiated the period known as Bourbon Restoration and concluded with his premature death when he was 27, victim of tuberculosis. He was succeeded to the throne by his son Alfonso XIII, whose minority was headed by the regency of his mother, the widowed queen, Maria Christina of Austria. Alfonso XII was married twice: on January 23, 1878 he married his cousin Maria de las Mercedes of Orléans, daughter of the duke and the duchess of Montpensier; unfortunately, the queen died of typhus five months later; on November 29, 1879 and he married Maria Christina of Austria, second cousin of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. He had three children during his second marriage: María de las Mercedes, Princess of Asturias and Infanta of Spain (1880-1904), Consort Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (1870-1949); María Teresa, Infanta of Spain (1882-1912), Consort Prince Ferdinand of Bavaria; and Alfonso XIII (1886-1941), king of Spain.
