History:

Philip III was King of Spain, Portugal, Naples, Sicily and Sardinia. Son and successor of King Philip II of Spain and Anna of Austria (1549-1580). In 1599 he married Archduchess Margaret of Austria-Styria and they had eight children, but only five reached adulthood:

-Ana Maria Mauricia (1601-1666), queen consort of France because of her marriage to Louis XIII.

-Philip (1601-1665), future King Philip IV of Spain.

-Maria Anna (1606-1665), Empress of the Holy Roman Empire because of her marriage to Ferdinand III.

-Charles of Austria, infant of Spain (1607-1632).

-Ferdinand (1609-1641), Cardinal Archbishop of Toledo.

During his reign he relied on his favorite Francisco de Sandoval, Marquis of Denia and Duke of Lerma since 1599. The king's favorite was focused on maintaining international peace, expelling the Moors and on his personal enrichment. In the religious sphere, with Philip III the foundation of monasteries increased enormously and the Society of Jesus, treated with certain distrust by its father, was favored by the monarch while maintaining his influence in the court. Throughout the reign, institutional reforms were carried out in order to solve problems related to corruption and ineffectiveness, which afflicted the administration of the Monarchy: apart from the changes introduced in the traditional system of Councils, recourse to the Boards became more and more widespread, corps destined to diminish the power of those in favor of a more agile and coherent government, but which did not produce the desired result (Junta de Guerra de Indias, Junta de Desempeño, Junta de Hacienda de Portugal…). The financial problems, which had dragged on since the previous reign, made the king dependent on the Cortes, which he had to reunite more frequently than his predecessors in order to be granted the essential resources destined to maintain the external action of the Monarchy.
