History:

Spanish painter of a family of artists. He was brother of sculptor Mariano Benlliure and painter Juan Antonio Benlliure. He married María Ortiz and had one son: painter José Benlliure Ortiz.

As painter, he dealt with "Costumbrismo" and portraits. He began his arts studies at the age of 12 along with Francisco Domingo Marqués. After being some time in Madrid, he moved to Rome in 1879, where he was director of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts between 1903 and 1913. He won the third prize in the National Exhibition in 1876 and 1878, and the first prize in 1887. He went to Algeria and Morocco. After his death, his house and his study became museum.
