History:

Spanish lawyer, politician and writer. Native from Madrid. Feminist, she was one of the great figures of the Spanish history of the 20th century. Daughter of Manuel Campoamor, accountant, and of María Pilar Rodríguez, seamstress. She graduated in Law and processed the first divorces.

The modification of the electoral law in 1931 allowed women above the age of 23 to be elected as deputies of the Congress. Clara Campoamor, together with Victoria Kent and Margarita Nelken were the only three women that obtained a seat as deputies. She defended the right of women to vote at the Congress, for what she confronted Victoria Kent.

She was President of the Feminine Republican Union. General Director of Charity. Deputy of Congress representing Madrid. With the outbreak of the Civil War she went into exile, first to Lausanne (Switzerland) and later to Buenos Aires (Argentina). She passed away in Lausanne in 1972 at the age of 84.
