American producer and film director. Known as the director of the films "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) and "Gone with the Wind" (1939), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director.
While working as a mechanic he met Allan Dwan (1885-1981), who offered him a job as a camera assistant. Likewise, his relationship with Marshall Neilan (1981-1958), whom he met while working as a chauffeur, facilitated his entrance into the film industry.
In 1919 he made his debut as a film director with "When the Clouds Roll by". Later, in 1932, he joined the Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer company, directing some of his best-known films, such as "Treasure Island" (1934) and "Reckless" (1935), as well as the aforementioned classics from 1939. Some of his other works as director are "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941), "Tortilla Flat" (1942) and Joan of Arc (1948).
