British-American actress. Sister of Joan Fontaine (1917-2013). Known for participating in the film "Gone with the wind" (1939) as Melanie Hamilton. She debuted as a professional actress with the film "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1935). That same year she would participate in various other films, mainly "The Irish in Us" (1935) and "Captain Blood" (1935) alongside Errol Flynn (1909-1959), with whom she would work numerous times. Later she acted in the film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) as Maid Marian. A year later she took part in "Dodge City" (1939) and the classic "Gone with the Wind" (1939). After this she was involved in many different productions, as "Hold Back the Dawn" (1941) and "To Each His Own" (1946), winning an Academy Award for Best Actress, something that would happen again in 1949 with the film "The Heiress" (1949). Other works in which she has participated are "Raffles" (1939), "They Died with Their Boots On" (1941) and "The Proud Rebel" (1958).
