American actor, producer and film director. He started his career as an actor, after which he worked as an assistant for Cecil B.De Mille (1881-1959). During the first half of 1920 he directed films alongside some of Paramount Picture's most popular stars, such as Gloria Swanson (1899-1983). In 1927 he joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), filming some of his best-known works, such as "A Night at the Opera" (1935) and "A Day at the Races" (1937), both starring the Marx Brothers. He also worked for some time as the director of "Gone with the Wind" (1939). Some of his other works as director are "Kitty Foyle" (1940), "Form Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943) and "Ambush" (1950).
